Indirect Tax Manager  (Hybrid)

The Indirect Tax Manager leads James Hardie Building Products Inc. and its related North American subsidiaries tax compliance, audit defense, and strategic initiatives in respect of indirect taxes. Included are sales/use, GST/HST/PST, VAT, gross receipts, real and personal property taxes, business licenses, and other miscellaneous taxes and fees. The role requires technical tax knowledge and experience with indirect taxes. Soft skills include proven effective project management, demonstrated cross functional engagement and active influencing of business operations, processes, procedures, and systems as well as leading of process improvement. 


Works on:

While ensuring efficient and accurate tax compliance operations, the role strategically drives the innovation and transformation of the functional area. Optimizes and automates data management for internal systems and external reporting.  Identifies, furthers, and implements tax technology solutions to achieve tax efficiency and effectiveness. Leads the centralization and systemic integration of procurement taxation. Enhances functional area value with internal business partners through accretive visibility, actionable data and knowledge, and risk reduction.


Works with:

The role leads two indirect tax team members under the direction of the Indirect Tax Director. The position partners with multiple internal business units, external tax agencies, various regulatory authorities, third party consultants and multiple professional entities.   


Required Education/Experience/Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Master’s Degree in Tax, CPA, and/or IPT CMI certification preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience industry or tax consultancy positions working with US indirect taxes.
  • Analytical skills and experience coordinating a multi-state indirect tax compliance function.
  • Proven understanding of complex tax concepts with ability to complete legal research, apply interpretations to relevant fact patterns, and communicate recommendation in clear and concise manner.
  • Strong project management skillset vital for end-to-end development and deployment of process improvements to mitigate risk and add value.
  • Substantiative experience in multi-state procurement taxation. Manufacturing industry preferred.
  • Digital literacy and experience with applications such as MS Office, SAP, Alteryx, RIA Checkpoint and/or similar.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills. Flexible, adaptable, and innovative.  
  • Prior data analytics, integration, and automation experience preferred.
  • Leadership growth potential. An advancing career with increased knowledge/responsibilities and complex tax issue resolution.
