Position Summary

 

As a Sr. Scientist in the Research & Development organization, the successful candidate will perform various fundamental studies and research to establish desirable formulation with ideal rheology of fiber reinforced ceramic pastes for high solids forming processes.

 

This position requires a motivated, flexible and performance driven Sr Research Scientist to support the R&D business in delivering results and driving projects forward. The role is responsible for the delivery of projects from concept to implementation while working closely with the other engineers and scientist within the immediate team and wider James Hardie organization. The role includes working closely with other teams from Research, Product Development and Manufacturing Operations to deliver results for the organization.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

Utilizes scientific, analytical and engineering skills to formulate and develop new composite building materials using natural, synthetic, or manufactured raw materials. Perform research through vigorous literature and prior art review, experiment designs, formulations design, testing and validating in pilot scale facility:  (70%)

  • Drive the development of desirable paste formulation, including paste additives in an R&D environment that compliment world-class ceramic extrusion and subsequent processes for manufacturing high quality, thick fiber reinforced products
  • Scaleup R&D materials & formulations to manufacturing scale via pilot scale experiments and manufacturing scale validation
  • Understand the material performance and the product performance
  • Use Design of Experiment (DoE) to design and conduct experiments for desired chemical, mechanical and physical properties of fiber cement products.   
  • Conduct literature reviews through independent research in order to understand the relevant fundamental and generate critical insights for the new formulation development
  • Coordinates and/or participates in pilot and factory trials on new or improved technologies
  • Independently plan trials through coordinating resources (both personnel and equipment) and coordinating the availability of raw materials
  • Make sound recommendations to R&D leaders and other business units based on solid data and in alignment with business strategy

 

Actively leads and supports the plant safety program:  (15%)

  • Demonstrate leadership in Zero Harm & Safety initiatives that keep both employees and the workplace protected
  • Apply 5S philosophy with R&D environments and all JH locations
  • Complete monthly OSHA mandated training
  • Ensure a safe work environment through good housekeeping and equipment operations
  • Promote safety culture by leading and participating in various safety initiatives

 

Manages projects effectively:  (15%)

  • Utilize effective project management skills to deliver research studies in a timely manner as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed
  • Work cross-functionally with rheology and process related counterpart(s) towards a common goal

 

 

Education/Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree required (advanced degrees are preferred). Degree must be from an accredited institution.
