R&D Manager, Technology Development

The Manager - Technology Development will be responsible for building and leading a high performing and innovative technical team to deliver technology development outputs that meet the highest global standards. This position will have you own the overall strategy of developing the technology behind the products through to implementation stage and the day-to-day progress of next generation technology and other product development projects.


This position will report to the Sr. Director, Global Innovation and will have a highly visible position in the organization as well as Product Development leaders, Business Development Managers and other Technical/Functional managers.


  • Develops and implements strategic and technical direction from the formulation phase through implementation of new and improved technology and or new product development projects by:
  • Creating the strategy and the direction for a team of technologists to deliver innovative solutions, new products and technologies.
  • Providing high level technical guidance and oversight on multidisciplinary projects
  • Lead the team and manage the scheduling, delegation, production, timely delivery and quality of all project outputs, in accordance with priorities set from the business.
  • Implementing realistic project plans and building appropriate and effective teams to accomplish the project goals
  • Leading teams working on formulation and development of new and improved products through the research and development stage
  • Managing the stage gate process to be able to meet all established milestones and overall business objectives.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with internal colleagues, customers, external vendors and service providers by:
  • Communicating project progress accurately and timely to Technical and Business leaders.
  • Collaborating with other technical managers on projects to maximize the utilization of the expertise and sharing of resources
  • Build key processes, initiate project work tied to key technical areas and build team by:
  • Leading technology and product development of building boards and construction materials.
  • Concept generation, test and validation development from lab scale to run real world.
  • Lead & Participate in planning, preparing and running trials of new and existing equipment, technologies and products.
  • Providing Engineering SME support to various projects in concept and feasibility of new technologies.
  • Lead & Participate in ideation sessions, design challenges, rapid prototyping, decision analysis and technical reviews.
  • Develop / Maintain job and technical knowledge to maintain expert level in relevant discipline.
  • Collaborate effectively across the business and functions. Work closely with vendors and suppliers to deliver the best solution to the business.
  • Work in a dynamic and agile work environment to perform real-time scenario planning based on execution velocity, changing priorities and market shifts.
  • Develops the processes, tools and techniques to manage the teams to achieve the required outcomes, and to realize organisational and business operational goals by:
  • Ensuring workforce resources are in place and aligned with business needs and organisation culture.
  • Managing, coaching and developing direct reports, comprising of principle scientists, engineers and other business teams as required and empowering them to exceptional performance
  • Providing direction and guidance for team leaders within the R&D organization in various committees, work groups, task force teams
  • Promoting organizational change and adoption of common business processes
  • Resolving team conflicts, listening to different perspectives and ideas, offering expertise, and defining objectives and overall vision.

  • Building capability of team members to ensure bench strength within the department
  • Creates an awareness of the importance of maximizing operational efficiency within JH Research and other functional groups that work closely with R&D by:
  • Foster an innovative and agile working environment to support cross-functional collaboration
  • Manage the generation of Intellectual Property and Trade secrets in the areas of technology development
  • Foster and maintain a culture of ZeroHarm:
  • Ensure that James Hardie’s operations are in line with Work Health and Safety Requirements at all times.
  • Report any incidents, hazards, near misses or “at-risk” behaviours in a timely fashion
  • Comply with any reasonable request related to health and safety including attending health and safety related training, participating in health and safety initiatives / activities and ensuring that either your acts or omissions do not place any person at risk
  • Providing supervision and training to others to allow them to perform their work safely
  • Responding to any hazard or incident that is raised by another James Hardie team member and provide or seek the support required to allow them to work safely and respond to the identified workplace issue.

  • Project management experience (PMP certification is a plus but not required)
  • Technical management experience
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams whose members may not be direct reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and with other aspects of an operating business (e.g., marketing, sales, manufacturing, logistics)
  • Experience with Stage/Gate or Phase/Gate development processes is a plus
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and code approval processes is a plus


  • Minimum of B.S in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or related field). Degree must be from accredited institution.
  • Knowledge with technical codes, standards and specifications, with familiarity with Local Building Codes and Practices, preferred
  • Knowledge in both Waterfall (PMP, Prince2) and Agile Project Management methodologies is a plus
  • Experience in Engineering Software; ETABS, RAPT, Microstran and FEA systems, etc. a plus


  • 5+ years in a product or technology development environment
  • Must have building science background and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in Structural Analysis, Engineering Modelling and Design.
  • A strong aptitude for innovation and demonstrating new ideas quickly, safely and developing new systems and techniques.
  • A strong technical background in chosen engineering field with demonstrated real world experience in construction industries.
  • Demonstrated success in technical project management and delivery
  • Experience in motivating and multidiscipline teams of technical professionals to deliver development projects under timelines.
