The Application Engineer – Instructional Content Developer will be responsible multimedia instructional content development to join our team. This role is part of Research and Development’s AE (Application Engineering) team and will coordinate daily activities related to technical content creation and multimedia instructions for our existing products and new innovations. It involves designing and developing instructional materials (written, video, animation, virtual) that help product installers understand and use James Hardie’s innovative products and installation processes in a way that maximizes their quality and profitability. The end goal is a user-friendly experience that enhances the adoption and commercialization success of our products in the market. This role will work projects through the Hardie Innovation Phase-Gate System from Scoping to Deployment. The role requires an ability in understanding the installer mindset, technical writing, graphic design, video editing and multimedia technologies.

 

This role will be based in Fontana CA reporting to the R&D Application Engineering Manager. Projects will occur across North America and therefore require up to 30% travel.

 

Key Responsibilities

Content Development / Innovation:

  • Scope out instructional requirements through analysis: identify target audience, assess target audience needs (end user needs), identify problems, identify stakeholder “must haves” and “nice to haves”
  • Develop written instructions, technical bulletins, design supplements, installation videos and installation animations to meet learning objectives.
  • Regularly collaborate with marketing to deploy all product based instructional content to our websites. 
  • Manage and update existing install instructional materials to reflect changes in technology, regulations, or industry standards.
  • Consider the broad scope of content and support to determine the best learning progression and delivery mechanisms for new content as well as refinement to existing content.

  • Design, Develop and deploy evaluation methods to measure the instructional material’s effectiveness based on learning requirements.
  • Conceptualize and contribute to innovative methods for digital content delivery alongside key stakeholders to enhance access to point of use with user programs.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for product installation - support sales and key customer accounts (engineers, architects, builders, GCs, installers) 
  • Work as our business representative within targeted industry Trade Associations 


Content Management:

  • Design a taxonomy for instructional materials (e.g., installation instructions, technical bulletins, best practice manuals, video content, and animations)
  • Maintain the install focused content taxonomy / library within our Digital Asset Management system.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to ensure seamless integration across multimedia technologies.
  • Debug online content as needed.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and advancements in siding installation techniques to ensure training content is current and relevant.
  • Develop a meeting cadence with cross functional stakeholders to PDCA and proactively address emerging needs.

 

Project Management:

  • Manage instructional design projects from start to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget, including high level timeline with milestones, resource plans, monthly plans, and weekly punch lists.
  • Coordinate and create multiple workstreams within a new product development project or other business initiatives.
  • Drive collaboration cross-functionally with marketing sales, legal, quality, warranty, install segment, technology, product development, and subject matter experts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external vendors and service providers.
  • Effectively communicate progress updates to both key R&D and Business stakeholders on project status and solicit feedback for continuous improvement.

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering, multimedia, or technical discipline or related discipline required.
  • Master’s Degree in related field preferred.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of proven experience in developing product installation instructions / instructional content within a fast-paced industry or consulting.
  • Ability to identify possible challenges and find solutions through thoughtful inquiry.
  • Proven experience effectively managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Vast experience using presentation, workflow, and instructional design software for professional learning purposes (such as Webex, Smartsheet, Project, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Exceptional ability to conceptualize and execute content for a variety of media types and audiences, prior instructional design or digital development experience.
  • Receptive to feedback and iterating on work to ensure educators and audience receive the best content possible.
  • Prefer experience with building materials, general construction, or architecture.
  • Experience in sales is a plus.
  • Experience with Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing, or Toyota Production System (TPS) is a plus.

  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, scripts.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with subject matter experts and diverse teams (architects, engineers, contractors, product installers).
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to travel an average of 30%.
