As the Head of Glbal Accounting, you will be responsible for overseeing and directing the Global Controllership and External Reporting Operations of James Hardie and report directly to the CFO. You'll be a thought leader on a range of finance-related issues and exhibits the company’s core values and principles in interfacing with other senior finance and operations personnel as a member of functional teams,  oversees and direct the financial activities of the company globally,  while ensuring accurate books and records and effective internal controls. The Head of Global Accounting is a key leader within the broader Finance organization. This position has direct oversight of all global and regional controllership teams, including the following: General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Credit, Travel and Expense, Fixed Assets, Internal/SOX Controls, External Reporting, Technical Accounting, etc.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting (must be be from an accedited institution)
  • CPA or Chartered Accountant license
  • 15+ years of progressive accounting/finance work experience with a mix of public “Big 4” and nonpublic experience
  • Experience in a global, publicly traded, $2B+ in revenue compay
  • Large ERP experience
  • Ability to travel 15-25% (50% domestic/50% internatonal)

Key Responsibilities

Oversee global Controllership operations, including control systems, transaction-processing operations and policies and procedures and provides accounting leadership and direction for the company

  • Ensure accurate books and records
  • Perform timely and robust risk-based analytical and quantitative reviews of financial performance and monthly internal financial reports
  • Ensure effective internal controls and that the control environment design is appropriate and rationalized and utilizes effective monitoring mechanisms to confirm all controls are performed and documented in accordance with expectations and SOX requirements
  • Ensure the timely internal reporting of financial results provided to global operations teams provides meaningful insight and analysis which helps inform them of key information when making strategic decisions
  • Prepare timely financial statements based on U.S. GAAP; ensure the accuracy of financial statements as well as financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP and SEC requirements
  • Ensure timely submission and accurate preparation of financial statements based on local statutory filing requirements in line with local/regional requirements
  • Act as a policy authority by participating on functional teams to perform regular implementation and reviews of policies and procedures to bolster the integrity of financial accounting and reporting, mitigate business risks and interface effectively with business practices in a practical and reasonable manner
  • Maintain performance metrics for all departments globally, and leverage those metrics to drive consistent performance and identify areas of improvement
  • Own Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance globally and ensure that controls are adequately maintained and followed.
  • Ensure the audit cycle is executed seamlessly globally and mitigate audit overruns arising from internal inefficiencies. Manage the working relationship with external and internal auditors including key relationships with partners and the Internal Audit team
  • Exercise professional skepticism in performing robust critical reviews of quantitative analyses and accounting memoranda that supports significant, unusual or non-recurring transactions; ensure estimates and assumptions are reasonable, supportable and explainable to internal and external stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with operational department/divisions, cost groups, finance directors, planning groups, etc. on significant, complex or non-recurring accounting matters
  • Understand how business processes impact balance sheet activity and develop solid expectations in performing analytical reviews of balance sheet accounts based on his/her understanding of the business
  • Work closely with IT Organization to ensure that all Accounting systems provides accurate, timely, and useful data
  • Communicate issues in a clear and concise manner within the organization and clearly convey thoughts and ideas using non-accounting jargon to support the senior management team in strategic and operational decision making
  • Demonstrate a keen ability to de-construct complex issues into straight-forward concepts and proposes plans of action to successfully navigate such matters in an organized and methodical framework
  • Demonstrate professional integrity when operating under pressure by challenging the status quo and questioning ideas and decisions to ensure the accuracy of financial information that governs the 
  • decision-making process for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Work closely with the Transformation Management Office (TMO) to drive process efficiencies within the Controllership Organization to help provide higher value to internal and external customers
  • Provide strategic and tactical support to Senior Management

  • Provide leadership to executive management regarding the impact of financial decisions, accounting policies and new accounting standards on the Company’s financial position, results of operations and cash flows
  • Demonstrate a keen ability to digest significant and complex accounting matters and can logically explain and discuss them with senior executives using “non-accountant” jargon
  • Collaborate with senior management and external auditors to ensure that issues arising from significant, complex accounting matters are communicated and resolved timely
  • Manage a high functioning Controllership Organization

  • Build and maintain the correct organizational structure, ensure the proper capacity and that each role is filled with the professional with the requisite skills and expertise
  • Recruit, motivate, and train a high performing staff
  • Emphasize a coaching culture by example through mentoring, motivating, and developing staff. Serve as a resource to team to facilitate their professional development
  • Lead the development of team goals and hold team accountable by celebrating "wins" and scrutinizing "losses" for continuous improvement
  • Promote a high level of ethical awareness and conduct within James Hardie Industries in support of the Company's Code of Business Conduct and Integrity Hotline program. Evaluate controls, principles, values, mission, etc. of James Hardie Industries to ensure they are being consistently upheld globally
  • Keep current on trends and developments in the accounting field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars, etc.
  • Champion learning and education by encouraging department team members to pursue and maintain professional accreditation and licensure as appropriate
  • Maintain peer relationships to share issues and ideas
